Why is morphine not effective for pain relief after I have had it several times over the years with no effect?

Ant time I have had it injected for pain relief, nothing has happened. I thought I might have been given a placebo, but that was never the case

Chosen Answer:

Everyone metabolizes medication differently. Tell the Dr.s it’s not effective. There are a lot of opioid to chose from; they will find one that works. Personally Morphine seemed the weakest compared to the codones. I was told, by a Friend, that is because the morphine is so clean in it’s action you don’t notice it. That is you don’t get a buzz or light headed.

What will work for pain/itch relief of shingles?

I was diagnosed with shingles last Wednesday and the doctor prescribed me Famvir and Lortab 7.5. I want to stop taking the Lortab because it’s making me constipated, but Tylenol isn’t going to do the trick. I’m allergic to ibuprofen and aspirin too, which really limits my options. The doctor told me not to put anything on the blisters.
So is there anything else that I could try for pain relief? They just started itching this morning (which is almost worse than the burning pain in my opinion.)
Oh, and my doctor is out of town and the doctor covering for him is terrible (bad experiences before with him) so I can’t exactly call asking for a different pain reliever.
Thanks for any advice/suggestions in advance!

Chosen Answer:

A little five year old boy, small for his age, that I look after, he had shingles, he was given medicine, but to help the itching, we put calamine lotion on the blisters, but also, got him to soak half an hour whenever he was really bothered in a bath of oatmeal, we got the Aveno kind, and it was great. :) It helped him a lot, and then we’d put more calamine lotion on afterwards. Wrapping a cold wet towel around the area will help as well as itching is often caused by the heat under the blisters. I hope some of these help! :)

What are the yoga positions best for back pain relief?

I think my insurance won’t cover physical therapy to relieve my back pain and I can’t afford a beginners Yoga class. If anyone out there knows the names of the postures for relieving back pain, I could possibly look them up one at a time. Thank you.

Chosen Answer:

You didn’t state what type of back pain you’re having. I go to a Chiropractor for lower back pain, and it’s affordable for the most part. She also gives me exercises to do between appointments. She recommended Cobra pose for me. You just have to make sure that your hips are firmly flat on the ground during this pose. Then move your arms back towards your hips and look up at the ceiling. Stay in the pose for about 30-45 seconds. Do this pose several times a day.

If your back pain is more in the upper back or shoulder area, Thread the Needle pose is good for that.

You could also start using a stability ball as your chair at the computer. And make sure you drink plenty of water every day. Not drinking enough water is often the cause of back pain.

Does anyone have a tip for the relief of leg pain due to varicose veins?

I’m on a surgical waiting list and am looking for other types of pain relief besides surgical stockings and elevating my legs–any tip would help.

Chosen Answer:

Kinesiology is great for all kinds of pain relief, and is very complimentary to whatever your doctor is doing. A good kinesiologist can show you simple techniques to minimise your pain that don’t require painkillers, so you don’t need to worry about interactions with anything your doctor may have given you. Couple of good websites to give you more info re kinesiology: www.luminouslife.com.au – www.kinesiology.com.au – www.icpkp.com These sites also list practitioners so that you can find someone in your area. Good luck!

How effective is gas for pain relief?

I’ve decided I want to try giving birth without drugs, or at the very least just gas. I don’t have my whole heart set on it and I realise I may change my mind when the time actually comes. My question is how effective is just gas for pain relief? I’ve heard it can make you feel a bit dizzy and out of it but is it actually any good for helping to manage pain?

Chosen Answer:

I was like you when I had my forth baby. I wanted to try as long as I could without anything. I relented & had gas, as the pain was getting to intense. I liked the gas, it just took the edge off, but you have to use it before the pain actually hits. I’ve found that having something else to focus on (a picture, or favourite music) helps heaps too. Just go with the contractions, but if you really feel you need help, take it.
Congratulations & Best wishes.

Any good pain relief out there for severe endometriosis?

My 28 year old daughter has endometriosis. When she does have a period, (she’s on the pill that’s supposed to stop your periods altogether.)she is doubled over in pain, and can barely function. The only thing her Dr. will give her is Motrin 800mg. The only thing that works is a narcotic pain killer like Lortab, or Percocet, which of course they won’t give her, because Dr.s have been scared by the government in to not prescribing narcotic pain relief even for severe pain, which is utterly rediculous, because not eveybody becomes an addict. (another subject altogether) She is also exibiting signs of fibromyalgia, which I also have, and I end up giving her my pain meds, which I don’t get many of, so she can function.

Help me please….

Chosen Answer:

I had endometriosis which was accidentally discovered while the doctor was performing a laparoscopic exam to check my fallopian tubes. I was under general anesthesia and they went ahead, cut me open and cleaned out all the endometrial implants. I never had a symptom UNTIL the surgery, then I had symptoms afterwards, because they didn’t get all of it. Afterwards, they told me the only medication available was to take a heavy dose of birth control pills for 6 months solid which would shrink the endometrial implants. This is what I did, and at some point decided I didn’t want to do this, it was too dangerous. I was lucky enough to be living in a large metropolitan area at the time and I went to see a female Chinese doctor who had been trained in China and had worked at some prestigious hospitals in China. She wrote a prescription for a combination of Chinese herbs. I went to the Chinese herb store and all the herbs had been prepared in the traditional way by various means which included drying and smoking. The main herb was Dong Quai which is a women’s herb and has an effect like estrogen. The herbs came in a paper packet tied with a string. I had to cook the herbs a certain way and drink the liquid. At first I didn’t like the taste but after time I got used to it and even came to like it. After about a month the symptoms disappeared. I took the herbs a couple of times after that when symptoms would reappear, but they never came back as strong and after a few times, they disappeared completely and I never had another problem with it. This type of therapy is commonplace today, but at the time it was very rare in the U.S. I don’t know what else was included in the herb packet but, in addition to alleviating my symptoms, they made me feel very good after drinking the liquid. My suggestion is to call an Acupuncturist because many of them also study Chinese herbs and are herb practitioners.
If you don’t want to try that route, may I suggest you find another doctor, one who will prescribe an appropriate and EFFECTIVE pain med. Not all doctors think pain control is a bad thing. Good luck, I hope she finds relief one way or another !
