Pain relief during labor and delivery?

I was looking online for some effective plain relief methods during labor and delivery. I am familiar with, although never used (first time Mom here) an epidural, spinal block, and other pain medications, but what can you tell me about a TENS machine? Has anyone experienced it before? I am still debating about my options, I know technically natural child birth is the way to go, good for mom and the baby, but I am leaning towards an epidural. My boyfriend insists the epidural is “cheating labor”, and thinks I should go natural. What kind of labor and delivery did you have? Did you have pain relief, if so what kind, was it effective?

Chosen Answer:

I’ve never used a tens machine, but I have had epidurals with all of my previous labors. Believe me, it can be a godsend. Your boyfriend needs to check his attitude at the door. Cheating labor? PUHLEEZE!! It is so much easier for him to say than it is for you to do. Besides, we all know that if men were the ones that had to go through labor and delivery, population growth would come to a standstill! There’s nothing wrong with going into labor with the plan to do it naturally (that’s my plan this time around), but keep yourself open to all of your options when it comes to pain relief. You don’t know ahead of time what YOUR experience will be like. Best of luck!

How to get relief from the pain because of an emerging wisdom tooth?

Chosen Answer:

Actually you would want to take Ibprofen instead of Tylenol, since Ibprofen is an inflammatory and will help the swelling from the tooth pushing through your gums. And beware these little buggers like to come up a little, stop for a week or even a month, then start up all over again! I have been getting my bottom left wisdom tooth for almost 6 months and you can just see the top of it! Good luck!

pain relief during labour? what are the options?

what is the best type of pain relief to have other than gas and air and epidural? ive heard that epidural is fantastic except i know i wouldn’t be able to have it as i have a phobia of injections, i can cope with blood tests during pregnancy but the thought of an injection in my spine makes me feel sick, and i just know that i would jump if they tried to give me an epidural, and i know that’s dangerous as it can paralyze you. whats the next best thing?

Chosen Answer:

I was extremely nervous about getting an epidural with my first child, but I was 7cm dialated and in so much pain that my entire body was shaking uncontrollably! The shaking made me even more nervous becuase they scare you about not moving while you are getting it done, but i’m soooo glad I did!.
With my second child, I got the epidual as soon as I possibly could, I think I was only 2-3 cm dialated, but well worth it! I got to sleep part of the time that I was in labor and I only pushed for about 5 minutes and it was a wonderful experience.
I just found out yesterday that i’m pregnant with baby # 3 and definitely plan on having another epidural! Good luck!

Epidurals and pain relief?

My husband and I trying to conceive, so I’ve been educating myself on different delivery options. I’ve heard both the horror stories and the miracles of epidurals. Are there other options besides epidurals for pain relief? Thanks in advance!

Chosen Answer:

Yes, there are many other options from hypnosis all the way to a full spinal. An epidural, however, is the most popular option because it is a continuous dose of medicine which means they can turn it up or down based on your needs. I had epidurals with both of my kids and loved it.

Pain relief during childbirth?

Did anyone get some kind of pain medicine/relief during childbirth BESIDES AN EPIDURAL?

How did your delivery go? What did you have? How was the pain? Why did you chose this method?

I’m wondering about childbirth options other than an epidural and I don’t think I could go completely natural.

Thanks!

Chosen Answer:

I was petrified of an epidural and I wanted to go totally natural (no meds, no episiotomy) with Lamaze breathing, and I have had 3 children. Well….for all three I had a shot of IV pain meds (nubane ?) and episiotomies. I also had fairly large babies (#1 boy 8 lbs 13 oz, #2 girl 8 lbs 3 oz, #3 boy 8 lbs 13 oz).

Yes labor hurts, but for me it was not terrible. The Lamaze breathing helps, and if you forget (like me and the hubby did) your nurses will remind you what to do. The pain shot took the edge off the pain and helped me to relax and let labor progress more quickly. And after you baby is born the hurt goes away so quickly its amazing.

I thought I could do it all with out meds. Read what you can, talk to women that have had kids and make up your own mind. When you do have an idea what you want – tell the delivery nurses. They will help you get the best experience possible for what you want. If you have any questions – ask them. They do this every day! For my first I told them no meds and they did not mention any, but after a while (he was stubborn and had to be induced) they came to me and suggested a shot and why. For #2 and #3 I asked more and listed to them.

Also, I was up and able to take a shower with in 1/2 to 1 hour after delivery. Being mobile is very important to me.

Congratulations – you’ll do great!

Relief for pain in legs from walking?

I am now without a vehicle and have been walking so much. I’m not use to it yet and my shins and ankles are killing me. What can I do to relieve the pain?

Chosen Answer:

You can try some ibuprofen before walking. Also take a warm bath. Remember to wear good walking shoes, that should help also.
